Skin moisturizer

Why is it so hard to find the right skin moisturizer? how do they work? what is their real effect, and why does it help fight the signs of age? Finding a reply to these questions requires a little information. You may find a few pointers here.

The skin is easily damaged by the elements.

The skin is prone to drying because of many external damaging factors : sunlight, weather changes, wind, friction, toxins, pollution… These elements not only damage the skin’s outer layer by making it dry and cracked, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. The inner layer of the skin needs proper hydration to keep the outer layer supple. A good moisturizer will help protect the skin from the damaging elements and lubricate the outer part to avoid developing premature aging signs.

So, what is a good skin moisturizer?

A good skin moisturizer must be molecularly similar to sebum, our natural lubricant, which is fat produced by glands in our pores and follicles. Thus, when applied, it shall be quickly absorbed by your skin without any greasy feeling at all. Being readily absorbed, it protects your skin’s outer layers instantly, hydrates its inner layers, and does not clog your skin’s pores.

What is a bad moisturizer?

Avoid any moisturizers containing petroleum-based oils, like mineral oil, petrolatum, and paraffin. They are not similar to your sebum on a molecular level, and will clog your pores, feel greasy, and may even change your skin’s PH in the long run, opening the way for infections.

How should moisturizer be applied?

Using a good moisturizer cream or lotion is a fundamental part of anti-aging skin care treatment. Application must be daily, shortly after cleaning – perhaps right after your shower.

Finally, if at all possible, use a moisturizer with a high content in anti-oxidants and protein complexes: this will help fight the aging action of free radicals, and keep your skin healthy, youthful, and supple.
